Coping with COVID-19 for Orthodox Christians

Adult/Family

Steven Christoforou recently wrote: “A friend shared something powerful. And troubling… He told me that, as we got into Holy Week, he finally realized something. Life under quarantine isn’t going to end with Pascha. It blew his mind! He somehow believed that coronavirus was part of our Lenten struggle. He somehow wasn’t ready to believe that, even with the joy of the Resurrection, we’d still be isolated from one another. Churches would still be closed. Ministry would still be online. That realization hurt….”
If you have found yourself in that same mindset, this article might be of some comfort: “…This year 2020 has been a strange year for us but all the things we need to live and rejoice remain untouched.
As a family activity, you might consider every evening at the dinner table, or before evening prayers, each person in your family shares what they are grateful for that day. Also, a personal gratitude journal for yourself.

“…Despite the restrictions temporarily placed on assembly, we still have the Church, because we still have each other. We still have a family which loves us and supports us…. We can endure any tribulation because of our faith in Jesus. Indeed, enduring these terrible things can make us stronger than we were before…. We can overcome the world through our faith, and our faith remains….”

Besides our Church (each other), our faith and Pascha, what else are we grateful for that ‘remains’?

“This Lent we have lost so much…. we… should be gratefully relieved to find that the things we really need to survive still remain, untouched by disaster. For three things remain and we have them still…. our church remains, our faith remains, Pascha remains.”

A Message from Maria Spanos

I am passionate about our Orthodox Christian faith and seek to help others learn as much as they can about it. My purpose here is to share online resources that help strengthen our relationship with Christ and bind us closer to His Church. I believe they are invaluable in learning about our precious Orthodox Tradition, and are a great aid for teaching family members, friends and others about Orthodoxy. ~Maria

Two of my favorite quotes:

“A true Christian behaves in this life so that it may be a preparation for the future one and not only a life here below. In his actions, he does not think what will be said of him here but of what will be said there in heaven; he represents to himself that he is always in the presence of God, of the angels and all the saints, and remembers that someday they will bear witness of his thoughts, words, and deeds.”  — Saint John of Kronstadt
